SuperLega: Piacenza hold off Modena, Trentino stay perfect
Gas Sales Bluenergy Piacenza made it six points from two matches with a 3-0 victory over Valsa Group Modena (25-21, 25-22, 25-23), although the visitors made them work for their second consecutive win.
Modena stayed within reach throughout and threatened to extend the match when they moved 22-20 ahead in the third set. Alessandro Bovolenta turned the tide from the service line, cutting the deficit to one with an ace before sustained pressure helped Piacenza take a 24-22 lead and close out the contest.
José Miguel Gutiérrez led the hosts with 14 points, supported by Manuel Zlatanov with 13. Modena converted 55 per cent of their attacks to Piacenza’s 48 per cent and outblocked the hosts 9-6, but those advantages were not enough to earn them a set.
Piacenza’s third-set line-up featured six Italians alongside Gutiérrez after Francesco Comparoni replaced Merrick McHenry. Bovolenta and Zlatanov played key roles as the young side found the decisive points under pressure.
Itas Trentino also made it two straight-sets wins from two, beating Cisterna Volley 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-22) in their first home match of the season. More than 3,100 spectators watched at the BTS Arena, where Cisterna pushed the hosts in every set but Trentino proved sharper in the closing exchanges.
Alessandro Michieletto earned MVP honours with 13 points, converting 56 per cent of his attacks and adding a block and three aces. All three aces came late in the third set, helping Trentino finish the job.
